ABUJA —The House of Representatives has threatened to issue a warrant of arrest on Customs Comptroller-General, Col. Hameed Ali, retd, if he failed to appear before its Public Accounts Committee, PAC, on November 8 to defend his agency.
The committee, during an interactive session with the agency, also threatened to go ahead and conclude investigations without reference to him.
The Customs boss had sent a representative, an Assistant Comptroller-General, Mr Idris Suleiman, to appear on his behalf last Thursday but was directed to produce the CCG and nobody else.
Members of the committee stood down the Auditor-General to the Federation, AuGF’s query and asked the CCG’s representative to excuse them for about 30 minutes to enable him contact the CCG to pick a convenient date for his appearance.
He re-appeared 30 minutes later to inform the committee members that his boss was not taking his call.
At this juncture, the lawmakers simply told the CCG’s representative to come back unfailingly on November 8 with his boss or face the wrath of the committee.
Using its constitutional powers, PAC can invoke Section 89 SS1d to compel the CCG to appear and defend how his agency had been managing its resources and expenditure from 2010 to 2013.
Chairman of the committee, Kingsley Chinda, PDP, Obio/Akpor federal constituency, Rivers State, simply told the CG’s representative: “ Make sure you appear here with your boss within the next eight days. You are discharged for now.”
The Office of the Auditor General of the Federation had raised queries on certain sub heads in the agency’s accounts that needed to be adequately explained.
