Speaking with journalists right after Nigeria defeated Algeria 3 – 1 at the Godswill Akpabio International stadium, the 67-year-old tactician who managed Anderlecht FC of Belgium between 1987 and 1988 where Keshi was a player says Nigeria lost a great star. “

I know Keshi so well and I need to honour him. He was my player at Anderlecht. He was a fantastic boy and a great player,” he emotionally said.

Georges Leekens pays tribute to late Stephen Keshi The former super eagles player featured for the Belgian club between 1987 and 1991 where he scored 18 goals in his 99 appearances before he moved to RC Strasbourg.

Stephen Keshi went on to be a manager himself with stints with the Malian national team, Togolese national team and also led the super eagles of Nigeria to win the 2013 AFCON tournament.

Keshi who was fondly called the ‘Big Boss’ died in the early hours of Wednesday, June 8, in Benin City, Edo state. He was buried in his home town Illah Delta state. Recall that the Fédération Algérienne de Football re-appointed Leekens as coach of the Algerian senior national team after Milovan Rajevac resigned following their 1 – 1 draw at home with Cameroon, in a 2018 World Cup qualifier.
