Nigerian Senate threatens to boycott plenary session

The Nigerian Senate called on INEC to conduct rerun election in Rivers and Anambra
– The two states are missing representatives in the senate
– Senators threatened to go on strike if elections are not conducted before December 10.
The Nigerian Senate has threatened to go boycott plenary session if the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government refuses to conduct rerun elections in Rivers and Anambra states,
Premium Times reports that this threat was issued following a motion moved by the deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu on Wednesday, October 2 calling for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct election in the states.

INEC had conducted rerun polls on March 19 following the nullification of the 2015 National Assembly and State Assembly elections in Rivers State by a court due to violence in the polls.

INEC has said that only guaranteed safety would allow it to conduct a rerun election in the state.

“While the Commission is committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections, it hereby reiterates its resolve not to return to Rivers State (or anywhere else where there was a breakdown of law and order in the course of conducting elections) until there is a conducive atmosphere for the conduct of credible elections.”

Rivers does not have any representative in the Senate as the rerun election has not been conducted yet.

The Anambra Central senatorial rerun was indefinitely postponed following a High Court ruling ordering inclusion of the Peoples Democratic Party.

INEC had barred PDP from the election because its guideline says no new candidate would be allowed in rerun polls. PDP’s candidate in the first poll, Uche Ekwunife, decamped to All Progressives Congress just after the Court of Appeal nullified her election.

The Senate Leader, Ali Ndume had said that the issue could have happened to any of them.

“It could be any of us in the case of Rivers; imagine a state like mine ravaged by insurgency without a representation.”

“Assuming the Senate was taking PIB deliberation today, it would be without a single senator from Rivers – Nigeria’s oil hub.”

Matthew Urhoghide said: “there is no other way we can input inhumane treatment than what INEC is doing in Rivers.”

Meanwhile, Dino Melaye moved a motion asking President Buhari to appoint a new minister from Kogi State as the position has been vacant since James Ochonu who was the state minister of labour died in an accident.
